Context:
Gen. 4:1: "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD."
V. 2: "And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground."
V. 3: "And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD."
V. 4: "And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:"
V. 5: "But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell."
V. 6: "And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?"
V. 7: "If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him."
Adam and Eve, the 1st man and women, had 2 children: Cain 1st and Abel 2nd. Cain was a tiller of the ground. And Abel was a sheep keeper. The time had come to bring offerings to the LORD. Cain brought vegetation. Abel brought meat and fat. GOD had respect unto Abel's offering, but not unto Cain's. This made Cain feel badly. And here is where Gen. 4:6-7 kicks in. GOD asked Cain why he was feeling down. GOD continued and said that if Cain would do well and do right by GOD, that GOD would no doubt accept him. But if Cain would do wrong and disregard the LORD's instructions, then Cain would be enabling *sin* to master him. Sin crouches at the door, waiting to take rule of us who answer it. Cain answered the door and became used of evil, ultimately killing his brother, Abel. GOD said for Cain to *MASTER SIN*. Because if you don't master sin, it'll master you.
Genesis 4:6-7 - Amplified Bible:
And the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you so angry? And why do you look annoyed? If you do well believing Me and doing what is acceptable and pleasing to Me, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well but ignore My instruction, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you to overpower you, but you must master it.”
GOD didn't hate Cain. His grace gave Cain a shot at doing right. He let Cain in on what was really goin' on. He taught Cain sin's M.O. GOD's always been merciful. It was never His desire to condemn. We condemn ourselves when we choose selfishness over Him.
