Scripture Post #2,061: *TIT FOR TAT ORIGIN*

Leviticus 24:

19 And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him;

20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

Context:

Leviticus 24:17: “And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.”

Verse 18: “And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.”

V. 19: “And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him;”

V. 20: “Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.”

V. 21: “And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.”

It was in GOD’s law for retaliation to be exercised in the lives of the descendants of Israel (Jacob). An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, even a life for a life.

GOD’s law, albeit established thousands of years ago, still affects society today. Take the Sabbath for instance. GOD’s Sabbath was intended to be a day of rest. Many people today count Sunday as the seventh day of rest. And society (Christian or non-Christian) slows down on Sundays more than any other day of the week because of GOD’s Sabbath origin. Stores close early, less work is done, and more rest is caught up on. This is no coincidence. Which brings me to GOD’s law of a life for a life. In today’s law, a life for a life continues to perpetuate; and this concept did not derive from just anywhere.
