Scripture Post #1,875: *FEAR GOD…SIN NOT*
Exodus 20:
18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
The Israelites had a healthy fear of GOD. They witnessed thunder, lightening and a smoking mountain. This caused the Israelites to respect GOD with utmost regard. Moses explained the purpose of the fear of the LORD: it was put in place to eliminate sin. (I fear GOD too much to sin against Him.)
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” ~Psalms 119:11.
“By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” ~Proverbs 16:6.
