Scripture Post #1,639: *SPILT SEED*
Genesis 38:9:
"And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother."
Judah, Jacob's/Israel's son, had 3 sons of his own. Judah's firstborn son, Er, was killed by the LORD for being evil. So Judah sent for Onan, his secondborn son, to marry his deceased older brother's wife and to have children with her in place of Er. Onan knew that any kids he'd have with his dead brother's wife wouldn't really be his, so he in today's world, basically used a condom when he slept with his hand-me-downed wife. He spilled his seed on the ground instead of planting it in his wife. This displeased the LORD, so the LORD killed Onan for his wickedness just as He'd killed his brother, Er, for his wickedness.
Context:
Gen. 38:8: "And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother."
Verse 9: "And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother."
V. 10: "And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also."
