Context:
Gen. 15:2: "And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?"
V. 3: "And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir."
V. 4: "And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir."

Abram (Abraham) thought one born of his household (but not born of his DNA) would take the position of his heir and possess his inheritance. But GOD showed him that this wasn't so. GOD said, "…He that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir." Abram's wife was very well past childbearing age. So it took great faith in GOD to believe that he'd ever have a son. But a son he had. Because GOD said he'd have one.
