*ARCHANGEL MICHAEL* protected Heaven from Lucifer's (Satan) destruction. There was a great war in Heaven which resulted in Lucifer's defeat. Lucifer became Satan when he fell from Heaven. And Satan's angels, became fallen angels, following the Devil to earth to wreak havoc. 

JESUS Was There For The War:

"And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." ~Luke 10:18.
