This Scripture was from Apostle Paul, unto Titus, his son in the common faith (Titus 1:1-4).
Our works of righteousness can't save us—*HE (JESUS) SAVED US*!! By HIS mercy. HE had mercy on us, by not sending us to a burning Hell where we deserve to be sent; JESUS was sent there in place of us. GOD had mercy on us by not placing judgement on us because of our sins—HE instead allowed HIS SON to become the sin we've committed. (2nd Cor. 5:21: "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.") Our judgement was placed upon JESUS. Such overwhelming mercy! It's amazing! "…According to his mercy he saved us…" HE not only saved us—HE washed us. HE regenerated us. (We no longer carry the genes of our old man, the genes of Adam; we now carry the genes of the new man, the renewed man, the genes of the LORD.) He renewed us. Wow. Breathtaking.
Context:
Titus 3:3: "For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another."
V. 4: "But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,"
V. 5: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"
V. 6: "Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;"
V. 7: "That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."
