"…Dead in trespasses and sins…" means that we were dead spiritually before we came to CHRIST, back when we were sinners. We were dead in the trespasses and sins that we used to do; hence, "…dead in trespasses and sins…"  When Adam ate and sinned, he died. GOD told him if he ate of the fruit of the tree that was forbidden, he'd die. GOD is a spiritual being and HE spoke of the spirit-realm when HE told Adam this. So Adam died spiritually when he sinned. Meaning he was spiritually separated from GOD. Adams' and GOD's spirits no  longer were compatible. And so, when Adam sinned and died, so did we. For we were in Adam when he died—making every man born a sinner by default. But praise be to GOD—we're no longer *DEAD MEN WALKING*— for we have been "quickened"—we have been saved and brought to life!

Eph. 2:5: "Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)"

Eph. 2:8: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"
